Gwailo, a rock band from Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England, have released a new single, "Try Me", which aired publicly for the first time yesterday on Spark Sunderland Radio. On this occasion, EuroZoom UK conducted a short interview.

Gwailo, your music is often described as a unique blend of various rock genres. Can you tell us more about your play style and how you've developed your sound over time?

Throughout the bands time and lineups we've always had a diverse set of musicians that listen to different styles of music, which is good because it means they have a different approach to writing their parts in the songs. Its gives a good blend to a new song instead of everyone listening to the exact same style and band then Gwailo would just sound like them.

With the release of your new single "Try Me," what would you say sets this track apart from your previous work? Are there any new elements or influences you've incorporated?

Well straight off you'll notice a new voice singing the lyrics which sets it apart from the other songs. Michael has his own influences that he blends together and come out in his singing. The tempo of "Try Me" is also slower than previous releases which lets you really swing with it and dig into the groove more when you're playing.

Can you share some insights into the songwriting process for "Try Me"? How did the idea come about and evolve into the final track?

Similar to previous songs we've wrote the initial ideas came during a rehearsal. You often find when the other guy is playing you join in and improvise something and it turns out to be a verse or chorus for a new song. I think Billy Gibbons put it best saying "you catch lightning in a bottle". It's a really organic way of writing and you can't beat the feeling and excitement when you create songs like that as a band standing in a room together.

The North East of England, particularly Newcastle upon Tyne, has a rich musical history. How has the region's musical heritage influenced your sound and your journey as a band?

The north east does have a rich heritage you've got Brian Johnson, Sting and David Coverdale from down the road as well as many talented musicians from recent times. We are all fans of AC/DC and Whitesnake, those bands form the bread and butter of what we do and then we try and add to it and make it our own. The area has many great venues that allow us to take the same steps as all these great bands that came before us. We've played Trillians and the former O2 Academy Newcastle, which are all places we've witnessed our hero's play.

Your fans have eagerly awaited new music from you. What has been the response to "Try Me" so far, and how does it feel to see people engaging with your latest work?

The response so far has been incredible. People really dig good old Rock N Roll which is why we are all here. It's always a great feeling seeing people listening and enjoying what you've created as a band and knowing that the hard work does pay off.

Regarding your plans for the rest of the year, can fans expect a new album, an EP, or more singles? Please give us hints about what's in store.

We are always planning at Gwailo HQ. We will be heading back into the studio this year to record another single or two accompanied by a video so there is lots to look forward to. We are very excited to record our next single which is different from what our fans have previously heard but non the less Gwailo through and through.

Finally, are there any upcoming tours or live performances where fans can experience "Try Me" and your other songs in person? What can they expect from a Gwailo show in 2023?

We have the "Try Me" release show at the Independent in Sunderland on May the 27th, which in true gwailo style is not your usual gig, but a raw, raucous, balls-to-the-wall rock and roll affair. We have some more local shows planned throughout the year which will be announced. We are also planning shows around the UK so everyone keep an eye out on all our social media platforms for up to date news on Gwailo.

Thank you for the interview and see you on stage.
